What it is
A grant of citizenship is how adult PRs become Canadian citizens — gaining the right to vote, a Canadian passport, and no residency obligations. The process: prove eligibility, pass a knowledge test (most adults), and take the oath at a ceremony.
Who is eligible
You must: be a PR with no unfulfilled conditions and no review/removal in progress; have 1,095 days (3 years) physically in Canada in the 5 years before signing (each PR day = 1 day; each pre-PR day as temporary resident/protected person = half day, max 365; sentence-serving time excluded); have filed income taxes for 3 of the 5 years if required; ages 18–54: English/French at CLB/NCLC 4+ and pass the knowledge test; no Citizenship Act prohibitions.
The process
- Confirm every requirement (use IRCC’s Physical Presence Calculator).
- Gather documents for the full 5-year period.
- Complete CIT 0002; pay the fee ($630 adults, $100 minors).
- Submit online or on paper.
- Study “Discover Canada”.
- Test/interview if required (18–54).
- Ceremony and oath.
Document checklist
PR card/COPR; passports covering 5 years; language proof (18–54); Notices of Assessment; two IRCC-spec photos; photo ID; fee receipt; children’s documents if applying for minors.
Important warnings
- Don’t apply until you meet ALL requirements — early applications are refused with lost fees.
- Keep precise travel records; IRCC cross-checks border data.
- Time outside Canada generally doesn’t count (rare Crown-servant exceptions).
Based on official guidance from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Next step: The physical-presence calculation trips up many applicants. Contact Journey to West Immigration to confirm eligibility before you apply.
